Killin time waiting for my new baby camera… April 15, 2008

Filed under: misc, paris — susan @ 8:47 pm

Hi and hello readers! I am happy to say my new baby lumix lx2 is en route into my eager hands. It’s been weird to not have a nifty compact camera around. I’m running out of things to post on. Nothing much has been going on in my kitchen except I’ve been testing recipes for The Grilled Cheese Invitational. Yup I’m a contender! I’ve signed up for all four categories so wish me luck.

Meanwhile I’m going to do a lil cheat post of my photos of the Bastille open market in Paris where my friends and I took a short vacation in the winter of 2006. We were luckily staying in a rented flat only a block away in the thicket of the Bastille area so I walked over on a Sunday for a morning stroll. Needless to say it was awesome. Fresh seafood, freshly baked bread, cheeses, wines, charcuterie, produce, plants, knick knacks,.. and on and on. I loved every cold minute of it. Wish I was in Paris right now. I miss it so way too much.

*a few of these pics were posted on my former and defunct blog. they were taken with a canon rebel*

Bacon Mints! January 24, 2008

My friend Ellen got me this as part of my xmas gift. Sounds scary huh? I smelled it once (through the wrapper mind you) and never will I need to smell it again or taste it for that matter. I’ll take back my belief that bacon makes everything better. But the can is cute, no?

Anyways, now that I got your attention… I wanted to take this post to say thanks to you readers that take a few minutes out of your day to read my humble blog. Writing was never my forte in school and I’m horribly averse to anything technical including photography and computers. But I enjoy cooking and food above anything else I hope that comes through. If I couldn’t share my kitchen activities with you all I would probably be bored and lonely.

I want to get to know you a little. Tell me something please! Here’s a bit about me…

Where?
Los Angeles. I was born in South Korea and moved to Southern California when I was 7. Been around here since.

Dinner tonight?
Mushroom lettuce wrap (busut ssam). I wanted to eat something healthy today. I sauteed sliced king oyster mushrooms in olive oil and ate it wrapped in butter lettuce with scallion salad, chili paste marinated cucumbers, ssamjang (fermented soy bean sauce), and a little bit of mixed grain rice.

Work?
I work in the financial industry. I can’t say it’s as much fun as cooking.

New year’s goals?
Drink more beer and wine. Learn more about beer and wine I mean.

**By the way I use Canon Power Shot S50 for all my pics in case you were curious.

Recently I’ve been finding blogs and websites that have been using my photographs without my permission, some not even credited to me. But look what I found today:

http://infinitysdove.bloggingitup.com/

Seriously wtf. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you will see that my blog basically has been copied and reposted onto this site, followed by a list of links such as:

abilene chamber of
ashland furniture
best cam for small block
breeze shaving
brookhaven mississippi
car financial services lake mary
centennial medical
csummer
elian
ersatz
farm jobs for west
hairy moms
holmes of hartlepool

God, some people are just so wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? And how did you find the stupid person for a good beating?

And please, if you want to use one of my pics for your own site ask first.

5 Things About Me March 26, 2007

Filed under: misc — susan @ 12:59 pm

5things

Scott over at One Food Guy tagged me (thanks Scott!) for the 5 Things About Me meme a while back. I’ll be honest with you. I’m not very good with meme-y things. Hmm, five seems like a lot of things to come up with but here is goes…

1. I used to be obsessed/in love with Jamie Oliver for a few years, years ago that is. That was back in college when I started watching FoodTV. Well I didn’t like him immediately although I loved his shows. But once he got a haircut I was in. I even tried to devise a plan to get to London so I could try out as an intern for his 15 restaurant. Now days I’m not so teeny bopper obsessed but I still enjoy his cookbooks a lot and I think he’s a good chef. I like his enthusiam and no-fuss cooking style.

2. Back when I was wee, I think early middle school or late elementary, my cousin and I tried to make a pie. We found out that the oven was broken so had to resort to the microwave. Needless to say, the pie came out pretty disgusting. Maybe this event played an integral part in me becoming more of a cook than a baker?

3. My favorite show ever is X-Files. I seriously love this show. I love horror, thriller, government/spy films. I am excited for The Good Shepherd!

4. I was born in Yesan, Korea and moved to the States when I was seven. In Korea, whenever there was a holiday or family gathering the families would join at my grandparent’s (on my dad’s side) and the ladies would get to making food. My grandmother did everything from scratch, making dduk (rice cakes), jang dduk (pressed fermented soybean curd that is sliced and fried in oil), and of course kimchi. When I was four or five there was a holiday/family gathering and the women were out in the patio making tons of kimchi. I wanted to watch and hang out with them so I made my way towards my mom dodging kimchi makers and potted plants. When I reached my mom I squatted my little tush down on a pot of cactus! Everything’s a blur after that moment from my crazy crying. I think my grandma took out all the thorns from my butt.

5. When I was little I hated mushrooms and beans (even the sweet red beans for pastries). Once I moved to the States the hate list grew to include licorice, celery, and mustard. Now days I enjoy mushroom, beans, and love a good jar of mustard. I do cook with celeriac, fennel and fennel seeds sometimes but when it is in combination with other flavors. I tried to make celeriac puree back in 2005 and I thought I was going to throw up from the celery stench and steam that was filling the kitchen. I was kind of hungover too so that didn’t help much. But I made celeriac potato puree recently and I didn’t faint or nuthin. In fact, it turned out delicious. But one thing I cannot stand, ever, is ginseng. My mom sometimes boils ginseng for my dad and it disgusts me truly to the bottom of my heart. Oh yea, I hate root beer and Dr. Pepper. I don’t really drink soda except for the occasional diet coke with fast food.

I think I’m the last one to have done this meme but if you’re reading this and you haven’t been tagged yet, it’s your turn! If you don’t have a blog, feel free tell us a few things about yourself in the comments section. :)
